Understanding the eRupt Transmission
At its core, the eRupt transmission is a sophisticated system that aims to replicate the sensation of gear shifting in traditional ICE vehicles. Unlike conventional transmissions with physical gears, it operates on the principle of intelligent torque modulation.
Instead of relying on mechanical gear changes, the eRupt transmission leverages advanced software algorithms to adjust the real-time electric drive module’s (EDM) torque output. This creates the illusion of shifting gears by precisely modulating torque delivery, providing drivers with a familiar and engaging driving experience.
Central to the functionality of the eRupt transmission is its ability to dynamically respond to driver input and vehicle conditions. Through a network of sensors, the system continuously monitors parameters such as throttle position, vehicle speed, and road conditions. This data is then processed by the transmission control unit (TCU), which orchestrates the appropriate torque adjustments to simulate gear shifts.
Seamless Integration with Vehicle Dynamics
Beyond merely simulating gear changes, the eRupt transmission seamlessly integrates with the overall dynamics of the vehicle. Whether accelerating from a standstill or cruising at highway speeds, the system optimizes torque delivery to enhance performance, efficiency, and driving comfort.
According to a recent patent-pending, MoparInsiders.com discovered that the eRupt transmission would feature multiple settings. In Normal mode, the eRupt transmission will provide simulated shifts of 600 milliseconds, giving the sensation of a conventional ICE vehicle’s transmission. In Sport mode, the eRupt speeds up the simulated shifts to 400 milliseconds, almost identical to the current Track mode on most 8HP 8-speed transmissions.
For those worried that the eRupt transmission would slow down the acceleration speed with these simulated shifts, Stellantis has addressed this concern with a Track mode setting. This setting cancels the simulated shifting and accelerates the BEV like a normal BEV. Wide-open throttle (WOT) driving, typically for track use only (but also applicable to sport mode), will be without simulated shifts and aims to deliver maximum torque at the wheels for all vehicle speeds to maximize performance.
Adaptability Across Different Vehicles
Looking at the patent, we discovered some interesting information that the eRupt transmission might be used across other vehicle platforms apart from the Dodge Charger Daytona. Among those is the application of off-road uses on vehicles like future Jeep® and Ram products.
The patent describes that with WOT, the eRupt transmission will work with other driver-selectable modes such as programmable variable throttle progression, Drift / Sand / Mud / Snow / Rock / Baja, and other drive modes can also be offered depending on the vehicle type and usage – ultimately suggesting that future electric Jeep and Ram vehicles are in the works. Former Ram CEO Mike Koval Jr. suggested an electric Ram TRX wouldn’t be out of the question, and this is the first hint we have such a vehicle being a possibility.
While some automakers continue to transition towards electrification, technologies like the eRupt transmission are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of mobility. By bridging the gap between ICE and EV driving experiences, Stellantis is looking to usher in a new era of EV performance.
